Product information
Potassium citrate
Potassium citrate is the potassium salt of citric acid. It usually exists as a white, odorless crystalline solid. It is very highly soluble in water and is characterized by a slightly salty and cool taste. The compound belongs to the organic salts and is an important source of the essential trace element potassium. A solution of potassium citrate reacts alkaline (basic) and has an excellent buffer capacity. This property enables the body to regulate its acid-base balance, which is why it plays a key role in human physiology.
Potassium citrate is primarily used in medicine and as a dietary supplement. In medical applications, it is used for the prophylaxis and treatment of certain types of kidney stones, as it increases the citrate concentration in urine and inhibits the growth of calcium oxalate and uric acid stones. Furthermore, it can serve for the alkalization of urine and the correction of metabolic acidosis.
Dietary Supplement: It is a readily available source to meet the daily potassium requirement and is frequently used in supplements.
Food Industry: As an additive (E 332), it serves as an acidity regulator, stabilizer, and buffer in various foods, such as dairy products, processed cheese, and soft drinks.
Sports: It is used in isotonic sports drinks to restore electrolyte balance.
