Product information
Potassium carbonate
Potassium carbonate is the potassium salt of carbonic acid. Historically, it is known as potash because it was formerly obtained by leaching wood ashes in pots. It exists as a white, odorless powder and is very highly soluble in water. An aqueous solution of potassium carbonate reacts strongly alkaline (basic) and possesses a good buffer capacity. It is also hygroscopic, meaning it easily attracts moisture from the environment. The salt is chemically stable and decomposes only at very high temperatures.
Potassium carbonate finds diverse applications, particularly in glass production, the food industry, and horticulture.
Food Industry: As an additive (E 501), it is used as an acidity regulator and a leavening agent. It is a traditional ingredient in lye pretzels (Laugengebäck) and is used in the production of gingerbread and Printen (a type of German cookie).
Glass Production: It serves as a flux and is an essential raw material for the production of optical glass and lead crystal, as it enables a higher light refraction than sodium carbonate.
Horticulture and Agriculture: It is used as a potassium fertilizer to increase potassium levels in the soil and strengthen plants.
Soap Production: Potash is used for the manufacture of soft soaps and liquid soaps.
Chemical Industry: It serves as a starting material for the production of other potassium compounds.
