Product information

Magnesium chloride

Magnesium chloride is an inorganic salt composed of magnesium and chlorine, and it very frequently occurs in its hydrated form, meaning with bound water. In its pure state, it is a white crystalline solid. One of its most important properties is its very high solubility in water. It is strongly hygroscopic or deliquescent, which means it attracts and retains moisture from the ambient air. In an aqueous solution, magnesium chloride reacts slightly acidic and is odorless in its dissolved form. It can be obtained from brine or as a byproduct of seawater processing.

Application

Magnesium chloride is widely used in various areas due to its special properties. It is frequently employed as de-icing salt and road salt, particularly in winter maintenance, because it remains effective even at very low temperatures. Furthermore, it is an important raw material for the industrial production of metallic magnesium. In the health and wellness sector, it is used for making bath additives and to meet the body's magnesium requirements. In the food industry, it serves as a firming agent and a coagulant, for example, in the production of tofu (as Nigari). Magnesium chloride is also required for various processes in the textile and paper industries.
