Copper(II) sulfate

Copper(II) sulfate is the copper salt of sulfuric acid and one of the most important copper salts. It is known for its intensely blue color when it is present in its most common form as the pentahydrate (with five water molecules bound). This hydrate form is also known as blue vitriol or bluestone. In contrast, the anhydrous form of copper(II) sulfate is a white or slightly grayish powder. Copper(II) sulfate dissolves very well in water, forming a blue solution. When heated above 200°C, the pentahydrate loses its water of crystallization and turns white, a reaction that can be used for the detection of water.

Application

Copper(II) sulfate is used in many areas due to its fungicidal (fungus-killing) and algaecidal (algae-killing) properties:

  • Agriculture and Horticulture: It is an important component of Bordeaux mixture, a classic plant protection product used to combat fungal diseases such as late blight on grapevines, potatoes, and tomatoes. It is also used to correct copper deficiencies in soils.

  • Water Treatment: It is employed to control algae in ponds, lakes, and water reservoirs.

  • Industry: It is used in electroplating (copper-plating of metal parts) and copper refining. Furthermore, it is utilized as a mordant in dyeing and for wood preservation.

  • Animal Husbandry: It is used as an additive to animal feed and in foot baths (e.g., for treating foot rot in sheep).

Note: Copper(II) sulfate is harmful to health if swallowed in higher concentrations and is very toxic to aquatic organisms, which is why handling the substance requires corresponding precautions and proper disposal.
