Product information
Ammonium formate
Ammonium formate is the ammonium salt of formic acid and usually appears as a white, crystalline powder. It is a hygroscopic solid, which means it attracts moisture from the environment. The salt is very water-soluble, and its aqueous solutions react almost neutral. Upon heating to about 180 degrees Celsius, the compound decomposes. When handled with strong bases, the salt releases ammonia gas. Although it is not highly flammable, its dust can cause dust explosions under certain conditions.
Ammonium formate has diverse applications, particularly in chemical analysis and synthesis. It is frequently used as a buffer solution in liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC/MS), as it improves the analysis of polar molecules and metabolites. In preparative organic chemistry, it serves as an important reagent, for example, in the production of amines via a reduction reaction. A technical application is found in low-freezing point solutions used for exhaust gas after-treatment to reduce the emission of nitrogen oxides. Furthermore, it can be used in analytical chemistry for the separation of base metals.
